for Vaughan Local & Regional Councillor
My name is Fred Winegust and I am running to be elected the next Regional
Councillor for York Region Council and Local Councillor for Vaughan City Council on Monday, October 22, 2018. Thank you for your interest in and support of my campaign.
I have lived in Thornhill and worked in York Region since 1986. My wife, Rena, and I raised our 5 children here. Recently, I retired from a 32-year career as an international marketing professional with IBM.
Vaughan and York Region have grown explosively over the last decades, growing into a diverse community with exceptional resources and services. Having worked across our country and across the globe, there is no place I would rather live. Still, there is room for improvement.
For the last 30 years, 100% of the Regional Councillors we have elected have come from west of Highway 400. While we send 48% of our municipal tax dollar to the region, our Thornhill-Concord community has no local voice. I believe that we can see the results of this silence in missed opportunities to:
- Widen Bathurst Street and Centre Street for cars, while the busway is constructed
- Improve traffic flow by coordinating separately run York Region and Vaughan traffic light systems.
- Reconnect the Concord West area to the West Don River and the Thornhill bike path, by going over or under the GO Barrie line
- Fund the Yonge Subway Extension
- Break the Unfair 2 Fare Wall
- Upgrade Rail and Truck Safety
- Improve Traffic Flow
- Prepare for an Aging Population
- Advocate for Responsible Development
It is time to change the balance at City and Regional Council by electing a Local & Regional voice from east of Highway 400. Urged by neighbours and friends and with the support of my family, I seeking to be the regional voice of Thornhill-Concord.
I deeply believe that a representative should be an active part of their community. Experience counts.
I am a lifetime supporter of UJA Federation, co-founding the High-Tech division and driving Holocaust Education week in its early years. Over 18 years of volunteering for State of Israel Bonds, I have helped raise over $1M of investments.
I was proud to be a part of Mayor Bevilacqua’s successful business mission to Israel in September 2013 and recently joined the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce. In 2018, I was honoured with the City of Vaughan Volunteer Recognition Award for work done with the South Central York Region Congestion Relief Committee.
I joined the Spring Farm Ratepayers Association (SFRA) in 2014, acting in roles including Director-at-large, VP and co-President. Bringing a marketing and technology background to SFRA, our organization is dedicated to using the best tools available to generate real insights and data. We have actively participated in reviews of projects including:
- the proposed Sobeys Plaza redevelopment;
- the Promenade / Thornhill Town Centre redevelopment;
- the Yonge Subway Extension;
- reducing or eliminating the 2 Fare Wall at Steeles.
Our efforts have already resulted in real and significant changes and improvements.
I have taken a leave of absence as SFRA co-President to run as Local & Regional Councillor.
Together, we will bring a Thornhill-Concord perspective and a collaborative, fact-based approach to solving community challenges.
