Brian Gerstein, Past Co-Chair, Sobeys Plaza Committee
I have had the pleasure of working directly with Fred Winegust and witnessed his collaborative approach to problem solving, which brought a positive resolution to the Sobey’s Plaza redevelopment proposal.
Fred Winegust and I initially co-chaired a Spring Farm Ratepayer Association committee on the proposed Sobeys Plaza redevelopment. Our objective was to understand and communicate to the City and the Developer what residents wanted to see with respect to a revamped Spring Farm Marketplace. Fred and the committee developed a Spring Farm Marketplace Survey to which over 300 people responded.
Fred worked with another co-chair when the Sobeys Plaza Committee formed a team to review all documents submitted by the developer to the city. In June 2016, 11 separate 5 minute deputations were made at a City of Vaughan Committee of the whole meeting.
As a result of the meeting, the developer came up with an improved proposal and is now looking at a single story, 10,000 square foot retail addition at the east end of the property.
Fred will bring geographic balance to Vaughan City Council by strengthening the voices of Local Ward representatives from Thornhill and East Vaughan. He will bring new insights to the Vaughan delegation to York Region Council.
