Peter Miasek, Past President, Transport Action Ontario
Fred Winegust helped organize a collaborative approach to understanding the transit needs of citizens across South Central York Region. He pulled together a coalition of Ratepayer Associations and individuals from across Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham to focus on developing new business value insights around the Yonge Subway Extension and the 2 Fare Wall at connection points between the TTC and the YRT.
Over 2,000 people responded to surveys which Fred & I developed for the South Central York Region Congestion Relief Committee. The results of these surveys were shared prior to the Provincial election at a Public Town Hall in Thornhill on May 2, 2018.
Mayor Frank Scarpitti added these new insights to his already strong business arguments in favor of the Yonge Subway Extension. These strengthened arguments helped lead to Premier Doug Ford’s June 4, 2018 signing of Mayor Scarpitti’s “Yonge Subway Extension Shovel of Commitment”.
Fred Winegust will make an excellent Regional Councillor to advocate on behalf of the citizens of Vaughan and York Region to ensure that transit promises made become transit promises met.
